What Stage of Menopause Am I In?
Menopause takes place across three distinct stages, though it can generally be defined when a woman's ovaries no longer produce estrogen or when her menstrual periods have stopped for one year. The menopause transition typically begins naturally around the age of 51, but it's possible to experience premature menopause.
The first stage is called perimenopause. In this stage, menstrual cycles can become irregular, but they won't stop completely. Symptoms of perimenopause may include hormone changes and early menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. It's important to remember that perimenopausal women can still get pregnant and may want to continue using contraception like birth control pills.
The second stage is full menopause. You won't know it's happened for sure during the onset of menopause, since you'll have to go twelve consecutive months without a period rather than just having irregular periods. Menopause symptoms can include mood swings, lowered libido, night sweats, vaginal dryness, headaches, hot flushes, irritability, a racing heartbeat, and general changes in hormone levels.
The third and final stage is postmenopause. This stage begins one year after you've had your final period. Menopause symptoms will begin to calm down at this stage, but it's important to remember that vaginal bleeding isn't considered normal at this point, so you'll want to consult a doctor if you experience it.
Our quiz will help you identify what stage of menopause you’re in, so you can start making informed health decisions. Your doctor can also give you a blood test for menopause, which will look for follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) since these levels rise as your ovaries stop producing estrogen.
