What to Wear in Menopause? Friendly, Fashionable Clothing

MenoLabs News | Wed, Nov 13, 2019

Menopause brings with it hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and weight gain, so you might start thinking about your fashion choices around that time. Many fashion magazines suggest baggy clothing items or shapewear for menopausal women. All so they can conceal the muffin top, bingo wings, or rounded hips. But these offers only make the woman less confident in herself. All of them are so boring and inelegant that you simply disappear into the crowd. But you change that by using our ideas for menopause friendly and fashionable clothing.

Secrets to Wearing Fashionable Clothing in Menopause

Yes, you can be going through menopause and still dress in the latest fashion. In fact, many brands design stylish clothing for women in their 40s and 50s. Do not let your weight gain become the reason why you should dress less fashionable. Here are some tips for you to stay on top of your clothing game.

Wear Layers

Layering your clothes not only helps experiment with fashion but also hides your hot flashes. As your body gets warm, you can easily take a layer off to cool it down. Start your outfit with a tank top, t-shirt, or a thin cotton shirt and layer them up from there. If you need to layer for work, a blazer or a cardigan should work well. Try to aim for a more classic style of clothing, especially if you work at an office.

Choose Natural Fabrics

When it comes to clothing in menopause, it is important to wear natural fabrics for the time when you have hot flashes. They will help prevent making you feel hot, sweaty, anxious, or chilly. So try wearing natural fabrics like cotton, rayon, linen, and any other fabrics that allow your body to “breathe” and absorbs sweat. But some women find that they do not want to feel sweaty in those, so they prefer fabrics often worn by sports athletes. Those that help your sweat evaporate faster instead of absorbing it. Now that you know your options, the choice is up to you.

Add Colors to Menopause Clothing

If you wear pale colors in clothing, your hot flashes will be more visible than otherwise. Aim for a colorful detail in your outfit or add some bright accessories so that you can divert people’s attention to those bright details when you are having a hot flash. Some patterns or textures in clothing work nicely to make you look slimmer, so check them out as well.

Invest in a New Bra

Research has shown that about one in five women at the age of menopause have an increase in their breast size. If it has been a while since you were properly measured for bras, make a trip to a lingerie store. So many women wear bras of the wrong size, and as a result, a lot of their clothing looks unflattering. Do not be stingy and get a new bra, and you will see and feel the difference.

How to Shop for Clothing in Menopause?

By this age, you already know what styles, colors, and types of clothing look good on you. Of course, you would not wear the same mini skirt you used to wear in your 20s, but that does not mean you have to hide your body behind shapeless clothing. Here are some tips on how you should approach shopping for new clothes.

Get Rid of the Old Stuff

Every woman has those items in her wardrobe that she never wears but feels sad to part with. These feelings will have to go. When you are going through your wardrobe, try on the clothes, shoes, accessories, and outerwear you have. Select the ones that do not suit you anymore or are too big/too small and give them away to friends or family or donate them to Red Cross or charity.

Avoid Impulse Shopping

The items you bought on an impulse will go straight to the previously mentioned category. And since you are supposed to get rid of those items, forget about impulsive shopping. If you buy a blouse which does not fit with the rest of the clothes you own, you will end up having to buy a new skirt, new shoes, and so on. Try to think about some outfit ideas before going shopping, as this would help you stay on track. Which leads us to our next point.

Browse Outfit Ideas

It is time to put the time you spend on Instagram to good use. Follow some fashion accounts of women of similar ages and see what brands they shop, how they create their outfits, and so on. You can also browse the websites of clothing brands directly for some ideas and talk to your female friends about where they shop. Even though you might think that you already developed your style, there might still be new things you can try out.

Shop Less but Best

Some women enjoy shopping for hours. They love trying on different outfits for the sake of trying and not necessarily buying them afterward. But for other women trying on outfit after outfit and finding that nothing fits can turn the shopping trip into a nightmare. They leave with sad feelings and lose confidence in themselves. To avoid this, limit the time you spend shopping. Look up some outfit ideas online and come to the store with a clear idea of what you want to buy. Or you can also shop directly online if you do not like going to the store.
